Is it normal to have so much trouble with Undead Burg?

So I was murdering Lautrec in undead burg with a new character and I'm limiting myself to a bad weapon so I decided to try and use the firelink lift to kill him with gravity and instead of letting him onto the lift it teleported him back to his spawn point. Does anyone know why some areas do this? WebUndead Burg is incredibly difficult for players starting out so I recommend just taking it slow. A common mistake I see among newer players is prioritizing damaging stats rather than vitality.
