He was the son of Ngāti Te Ata chief Aihepene (Ahipene) Kaihau, who also had tribal affiliations with Ngāti Urupikia, Ngāti Kahukōkā and Ngāti Tipā. Hēnare's mother's name was Rangipūkoru.
